I think the comparison between writers and musicians is an interesting one. Most of the musicians I know diversify their income. This doesn’t just mean taking a day job (although that’s a large part of it), it also means taking a wide variety of gigs, getting into their van and driving two hours round trip to play in a bar, coming back the next week to play for a private party, and playing in a municipal park the next.

Not every writer I know is willing to diversify. I’m relatively new to Medium and I love that I have the opportunity to publish here, but my bread and butter is writing SEO content about home decor. Work many writers find beneath them. But it’s what I need to do to earn a living so I can write the things I want to write.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in the article — I’ll probably reread it later because it gave me quite a bit to think about.
