Hi, Andrew Galloza, getting started as a freelancer is hard. There’s no perfect path that works for everyone, and much depends on the type of writing you do.
I’ve never worked for any of the content mills but I know many writers get started at sites like Copify, Contently, etc. The rates are low for beginners, but many writers find them worthwhile because they offer steady work and the chance to build their resume. Also, as they gather more experience they can start to qualify for better-paying gigs.
There are also lots of free job boards. I found my first steady gig on Indeed, BloggingPro and Media Bistro are also good.
You can also start pitching ideas direct to sites and pubs you think your work would be a good fit for. This will become easier as you get experience. If you don’t have any clips to include with your pitch you might want to start a blog or publish a few things here on Medium (it’s free) so you have something to link to if an editor wants to get a feel for your voice (which they probably will).
Good luck!
